Would you consider social media to be worth the benefits despite so many risks? The main purpose of social media is also to share information with your closest friends. But recently social media has been a big risk to use. Social media users think that if their profiles are private, only those people can view their information. Unfortunately this is not entirely true. People post very personal information on these social websites. Once a user posts something on the Internet, other people can access it immediately. The government, regardless of country, could see anyone's profile on any social media site it wanted. The US government closely monitors social media. “The number one problem is that the United States does not have data protection.” (Clemmit, 13) They can see anything they want, no matter how many restrictions the person has on their account. All our information is up for grabs. The only way to keep something “private” is to keep it to yourself and not use social media at all. The biggest problem now is that companies can see pretty much anything you've ever posted. They have the technology to do extensive background research. They will retrieve information up to your first post on the Internet. People post photos, write statuses and even show their participation in illegal activities. All of this could be used against you in the future. Once you post something, it will be theirs forever. It doesn't matter if you delete it. Someone could always get it back. Once deleted, a piece of information is still stored somewhere that the normal person couldn't find. Technology has too much power these days. Social media has proven to be… half the paper… the world will collapse tremendously. “86% of 18- to 29-year-olds use social media, compared to about a third of those aged 65 and older. But participation increased nearly fivefold among those 50 and older between 2008 and 2012. Nearly three times more 30- to 49-year-olds use social media than in 2008. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, the increase was only 19 percent. percent, with the same percentage using social media this year as two years ago. “ (Price 12) Social media is a hugely growing problem. Many people continue to sign up every year and seem to continue to use social media. The more people join together, the greater the dangers of social media. In today's society social media just creates a lot of problems. We need to monitor it as a whole or go to the point of eliminating social media entirely. This world will deteriorate if social media is used continuously.
