Kaplan, Travel is an important part of life, but it must be done well. The article begins with Kaplan on a plane and landing to find numerous emails demanding serious answers; showing how consistently helpful people are. He states: “The media tells us how lucky we are to live in the information age. I believe we have created hell on Earth for ourselves.” Kaplan also talks about when there was no advance warning of the arrivals. People weren't wasting time emailing to schedule appointments; instead hospitality was offered, almost without asking questions. Today, any question would be directed to a website for the answer. The intensity of the experience of foreign places has been diluted (Kaplan). He says the real adventure of travel is mental. Being in a new place with no contact creates vividness. Real conversations require concentration, not biased text messages. According to Kaplan, “The art of travel requires the end of multitasking.” He also says that travel is like a beautiful and inspiring book. It requires presence and resistance to distractions (Kaplan). This can then lead to peace, meditation and enjoyment. The present moment is sacred and the art of travel can only survive if people understand the importance of an authentic experience
