Military bases are located in many communities throughout the United States of America. Some bases were built first and then communities formed around them. Other bases were built in existing communities. There are bases that have been built where the government had to purchase land from farmers to build the bases. The planned base area in my community is a protected natural area, behind a school and a large residential area. The base also borders the sea. Military bases can have various impacts on the community, its residents, the environment, the ecosystem and the water surrounding the base. A military base should not be built in my community. A military base in my community will increase residents' fear of a terrorist attack. The United States government has made many enemies through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With foreign governments developing nuclear weapons to use against their enemies, a military base will be the first place to be attacked. A nuclear attack or any type of military attack on the military base will destroy the base and cause harm to the community and its residents. The long-term effects of this attack can be dangerous, as evidenced by the attack on Hiroshima. A military base should not be built in my community for fear of possible accidents. Accidents involving armed personnel during training can occur frequently and this can be dangerous for residents as the base will be located near a school and a large residential area. Accidents involving helicopters taking off and landing occur daily at the U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan. A small mistake can lead to a huge disaster in which many lives could be lost. This will create stress for residents… middle of paper… the base will require a huge amount of electricity and the increased electricity will increase greenhouse gas emissions into the environment. Almost every argument for a military community in the world is based on the promise that it will bring jobs to the community. The jobs will be mostly in the construction industry, and once construction is finished, there will be no more jobs unless you join the military. The military base will provide jobs for military personnel and the few civilian jobs will be filled by the spouse and family of military personnel. Military bases are self-sufficient as they have their own shops, petrol stations, cinemas and restaurants and therefore there will be no benefits to the community. The installation of a military base can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of people in the community, as well as on the environment and ecosystem.
