One of the most shocking books of the generation is Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. The novel includes two sections, “The American Way” and “Meat and Potatoes,” which help him describe the history and people who helped shape the foundation of “McWorld.” Fast Food Nation gets in on the action early in the novel with a discussion of Carl N. Karcher and the McDonald's brothers. Explore their role as "gods" of the fast food industry, then visit Colorado Springs and investigate the life and working conditions of the typical fast food industry employee. Beginning the second section, Schlosser travels to western Colorado to examine the effects presented to the world of agriculture in the new economy. After Schlosser's cross-country trip, he does it all at slaughterhouses and the main source of income for fast food franchises: meat After visiting meat factories in America, Schlosser explores the expansion of fast food in the Eastern Hemisphere , including the first McDonalds in Germany in the entire fast food nation, Eric Schlosser presents, from his perspective and in his informative tone, a detailed discussion of the conditions using various image examples and fluent diction/syntax to help support and show the audience the reasoning behind the novel. To fully understand Fast Food Nation, the reader must recognize the novel's intended audience as well as its purpose. Eric Schlosser's intention in writing this piece of literature was to inform America of how big the fast food industry truly is, bigger than most people can imagine. Schlosser explains that he “wrote this book with the belief that people should know what lies behind the… medium of paper… that someone in his industry wants to talk about openly. Schlosser wanted to inform the public and ensure that the conditions by which low-wage workers are oppressed were revealed to the rest of society and taken into account. He was extremely successful in showing this throughout his novel because all the details he includes tug at the reader's heartstrings. Overall, he demonstrated broad writing skills that are unique only to Schlosser himself. Works Cited Pothukuchi, Kameshwari.
