MEDIATION ANALYSIS ESSAY – 1994-95 MAJOR BASEBALL LEAGUE STRIKEMSgt ANGELA SANDERSAIR FORCE SENIOR NONCOMMISSIOND OFFICER ACADEMYDECEMBER 2, 2014INSTRUCTOR: SMSgt THOMAS HOLMESHow Baseball Team Owners Might lose $580 million in revenue and baseball players lose $230 million in salary in one year? The 232-day Major Baseball League strike of 1994-95 led to the loss of millions of dollars and the frustration of millions of fans over what they considered an act of war. Mediation between Major League Baseball team owners and baseball players proved ineffective in providing a contractual agreement that protected players from being used by the owners to benefit their businesses. I will first provide some background information on the baseball strike, followed by intercultural competence factors and how they influenced the event. Next, we will look at trading factors which will include the TYPE model and trading strategies. Finally, I will provide some highlights and effects of the mediation process. Now let's take a look at one of the most famous baseball hits of all time. The 1994-95 baseball strike was the fourth in 22 years and is known as the worst strike in the history of the sport. The biggest impact was the cancellation of approximately 948 games along with the World Series, resulting in the loss of millions of dollars. Team owners offered the players a salary cap deal due to the difficult financial situations the league was experiencing. Owners said teams needed to share broadcast revenues to make them equal across teams to prevent transfer market clubs from collapsing. This meant that smaller teams would not lose their bigger players to teams that relied on roster factors. We've learned that the selfishness of one person or group of people can have a dramatic ripple effect on other things. Sometimes you don't realize fast forwarding and looking to the future until it actually happens. Unfortunately, in this situation this is exactly what happened and it affected an entire nation.
