My students didn't study because they didn't know how to study. They nodded blindly when I explained Spanish grammar and said they understood, but they didn't even know what part of the grammar confused them on the tests. The students in my reading intervention knew they “couldn't read” (their words), but they didn't know why. As their teacher, I needed to communicate how to be an effective student before expecting any investment in their education. Therefore, in my years as a high school teacher, I taught study habits in addition to the curriculum, gave instruction on how to use textbooks, and used my tests as a way to assess their skill levels in so you can correct or enrich different students as needed.
