In the witty and intelligently written story of Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, the reader is taken on a journey that targets the strengths and weaknesses of different companies. Swift ingeniously incorporates the use of the main character, Lemuel Gulliver, and his experiences through the discovery of several islands to convey messages about the political system, society, and employment of scientists in his country. The first voyage on which Lemuel Gulliver sets foot is to the distant and strange island of Lilliput. In this extravagant insular rank, politics, international war, lose all their meaning. The natives of Lilliput show a striking resemblance to humans with the only trivial difference being three inches tall. Swift gradually begins to incorporate the Lilliputians into the story to satirize the purely evil and corrupt side of human nature. An emperor who holds all but a portion of power in all but a portion of the country leads the government of Lilliput. However, the reader soon discovers the microscopic cracks within the government system that allow corruption to take shape and thrive. Even though the Emperor is supposed to represent the highest level of authority and the supreme decision maker, he has a weakness that discredits all of his strengths combined. His weakness is the inability to make a decision and resist all other influences. The Emperor's small groups of advisors recognize this weakness and use every opportunity to their advantage to alter the Emperor's decisions and satisfy their own desires. Finally, our society has not changed regarding behaviors. All over the world one can witness cruel acts of murder, robbery, incest, lust and disregard for the customs and opinions of others. I honestly believe that if humans were put on a beached island with no tools to survive, everyone would turn into yahoos. All in all, Jonathan Swift has beautifully incorporated different aspects of the society, politics, and science of his period into the story of Gulliver's Travels.
