The narrator is intelligent and wise evident when the old man's heartbeat became louder, he felt the tension and thought the noise could be "heard by a neighbor" (Poe 624) . Therefore killing the old man and putting him under the floor step would allow the mission to be successful. The narrator is capable of demonstrating intelligence even if “no human eyes” were hidden in the place where he was hiding (Poe 624). he could see it or suspect something. Furthermore, when the narrator cut up her body, "there was nothing to wash away, no stain... no blood stain..." (Poe 624). To hide the evidence, at the same time, when the police arrived, he is on the front line taking them around the house and appears innocent, so he would not be suspected of the murder.
