The cause of hunger comes from Lappe and Collin's articles. It all started from the push towards a culture to change traditions and beliefs. Money, which a surplus of food commodities generates to a greater extent, was the sole purpose of forcing cultures to develop in ways they did not want. Taxes were implemented for this purpose, to get more money. I believe that the hunger for money is what creates the negative effects provided by colonialism. Bodley's essay goes into more detail about how the power of money influenced these cultures through malnutrition, ecocide, and disease. There is enough money in the world and there are enough resources for every single person on this planet, and yet there are people dying of hunger. I don't think the problem of hunger can be solved with a snap of the fingers. I believe it will take several years of compromise and understanding between underdeveloped countries. Transition and social change within a culture to a developed culture would be a solution, albeit a difficult one. It would take years for the culture to transition from its norm of poverty and become accustomed to a developed world. Government intervention could perhaps be another solution. Not all cultures have the ability to “ask”.”
