Before this course, the issue of classism was never vital to me. I understood the gap between disadvantaged and wealthy people, but not the cause of it. This seminar taught me about the structure of social class in our lives. The first video of the lesson revealed a person's concrete perception of a culture, in relation to the class. Chimamanda adichie, from the first video of the Ted Talk, explained how her Nigerian heritage was viewed differently in Western culture. They assumed that all people living in the country were low-class citizens with no property. These classist norms contribute to the creation of stereotypes among individuals. In Peck's article “The Middle Class Can Be Saved” the social and political contents are explained in the context of neoliberalism. This means that the rich are getting richer, while the poor are getting poorer. There is a huge cultural gap between college graduates and high school graduates.
