Maybe it's because of the amount of homework a student has to do every night? Whether the answer is yes or no is not as relevant as the answer to the question: How much sleep should a student get? Haley Drucker says a student should sleep 8-9 hours a night (Drucker, Haley.) The evolution of bedtime is quite immense from elementary school age to high school age. In elementary school, bedtime was like torture for kids who watched Full House and ate Scooby-Doo macaroni and cheese. Children will cry as if their parents are punishing them for being happy. As people transition from children to teenagers, the amount of sleep they get is very different. Sleep as a child is very stable and routine, but as a teenager it is very sporadic and unstable. Students who work late at night are unable to modulate the number of hours of sleep they receive. It seems implausible, but when students have to work and then do homework, they can only sleep three hours before waking up and getting ready for school. This can cause a student to be sad and tired during the school day. It can also cause a student to be completely energized and can cause the student to only talk about malapropisms during the lesson.
