Lysergic Acid Diethylamide is one of the most infamous yet most studied illegal drugs in this nation's history. It was first discovered by a Swiss chemist named Albert Hoffman; he was originally analyzing the effects and behaviors of various alkaloids from the Ergot mushroom, a common fungus that grows on wheat and is the most potent natural source of LSD in the world. Albert Hoffman discovered this drug when he tested some of its effects on himself, and soon found a very interesting attribute in his newly discovered compound. The following is a quote from Albert Hoffman, describing what he felt when he first felt the effects of LSD-25: “… affected by considerable restlessness, combined with slight dizziness. At home I would lie down and sink into a not unpleasant state of intoxication, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dream state, with my eyes closed (I found the daylight unpleasantly dazzling), I perceived an uninterrupted flow of fantastic images, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic color play. After about two hours this condition wore off…” An interesting fact about him (……middle of paper……while you hallucinate) Conclusion LSD is a very controversial drug and is one of the biggest taboos in history hopefully one day it will no longer be considered as such. But whether or not this will happen is up to us, the new generation, to decide; and I hope that in the end we will make the choice that best helps our fellow humans who need extreme alternatives to make their lives enjoyable again.
