Feldman and his family had the opportunity to hide because of the community in which they lived. The close-knit community was understanding and wanted to provide protection for the family. For Nothman, it was a different story. Individuals in his community had already sworn allegiance to the German government and would search for hidden Jews in exchange for compensation. For Nothman and his family there was no possibility of hiding, so they followed orders and went to the ghetto, everyone was expecting his brother. His father did not believe that the Nazis would harm him or his family because he often carried out projects for them, but his brother was convinced that they would have a better chance of survival if they fled to Russia; however he was the only one who went. One of the big factors that allowed Feldman and Nothman to be with their families was their family structures. Feldman's family was very close and everyone looked out for each other, and even though she wasn't the eldest, her older sister made sure everyone was together when it was time to hide.
