January 31, 2010, Liam Richardson; a 7-year-old boy who proclaimed himself John Terry's biggest fan, turned on the TV in the morning and burst into tears watching the news. He didn't eat food for days because he was dejected and couldn't believe it. The news read: “John Terry is involved in sex scandal with teammate's wife; resulting in a further reduction in England's chances at the World Cup.” Liam took all the John Terry posters off the wall. At that age he couldn't have understood what had happened, but he would always remember it. Liam was just one of many others who were affected by the news. Liam, like many other England fans, felt that all hopes of winning the 2010 World Cup had vanished with that news. I believe football is a universal sport in every sense: people of all ages, all genders and all nationalities follow it. The public, turning football stars into gods, considers football a religion and admires it for motivation and inspiration; furthermore, making them vulnerable and sentimental to scandals and controversies. The media, seeking to exploit this vulnerability, expands and emphasizes controversies so that the public has something to look at and react to. It is not only the public that is affected by the media, but also football professionals, teams and their families. A recent controversy that occurred was the scandal of Olivier Giroud, a player for the French national team and Arsenal. On February 16, 2014, a few hours before the important clash with rivals Liverpool, Giroud, through Twitter, admitted to having cheated on his wife and having had sexual relations with model Celia Kay.
