Often what is not natural by nature is not easily accepted by society. People are expected to live the way others think they should live and not the way they would like to live. The term “plastic surgery” comes from the Greek word “plastikos” which means to mold or mold.” (Plastic Surgery) Early plastic surgery was used as a method to correct injuries or defects in the early 1600s. According to ISAPS global statistics for 2010-2011, the number of non-surgical procedures that do not require incisions in Canada has decreased by 30 %, while the number of surgical procedures has increased by 30% compared to 2010. In recent years the practice is not just limited to correcting an abnormality or defect, it can be used to alter or improve an individual's appearance. Plastic surgery has proven useful in cases such as bullying, parenting, and the media. It has the ability to eliminate differences and help people conform to society's expectations. Bullying occurs when an individual or group attempts to gain power over another individual through physical or verbal abuse. The bully or perpetrator would choose a specific individual or victim to terrorize. There are numerous reasons why one might be a target. Here are some but they are not limited to these. People are prone to being bullied based on their appearance, background, ethnicity, skills, knowledge or what they have done. In the early years bullying is something that often occurs on playgrounds and in schools, however, with the advent of new technologies, bullying is no longer a problem. more limited to playgrounds and schools. With access to the Internet people have been able to freely express their thoughts......middle of paper......ce.(1)One might perceive that cosmetic surgery is like a self-inflicted wound in its attempt to heal psychological agony. Like hair dye and makeup, cosmetic surgery only serves to change the external appearance, but does not change who we are inside. Can altering one aspect physically harm someone else in some way? Is it wrong to want something better for yourself? Does the risk of plastic or cosmetic surgery outweigh its benefits? “Some might think that the risk of death is better than living in poverty.” (Teresa 1) Plastic surgery has allowed people to conform to society by eliminating their differences. The practice allowed people to alter and improve their appearance and not just to correct anomalies or defects. Coelho says: “Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how others should lead their lives, but none of their own”..” (16)
