Evander Holyfield said, “Well, when I think of steroids I think of an image. You have the advantage over someone, which is a form of cheating. I guess it wouldn't be fair if it wasn't legal for everyone. The reason it's not legal for everyone is because it can seriously injure people." I really agree with this. Most athletes want to be the best in their sport, and performance-enhancing drugs allow some to do so, but not without risk. Performance-enhancing drugs pose serious health risks and consequences for those who use them. In addition to the health problems resulting from the use of performance-enhancing drugs, these are also a form of cheating. Performance-enhancing drugs are also used by young athletes. With all these problems, performance-enhancing drugs must be banned. Performance-enhancing drugs have been around since the first Olympic Games in 776 BC. The Greeks ate meat and experimented with herbal medicines to improve their performance. Around 100 AD, Romans tried stimulants and hallucinogens to keep away tiredness and prevent injuries. Towards the end of the 19th century, athletes drank wine to improve their performance. But it was only in 1928 that the first laws against doping drugs were put into force. During World War II, the Nazis used steroids on German soldiers to improve their strength. Soldiers also used amphetamines during World War II. This use of amphetamines in soldiers leads athletes to use them after the war. In 1958 the Federal Drug Association approved the sale of the first anabolic steroid. Dr. John Zieglar created the drug called Dianabol. Dianabol used testosterone to increase strength. In the 1960s, athletes began dying from doping. In 1968 the Olympic Games began testing… middle of paper… The Digital Citizens Alliance stated, “nearly half of males aged 18 to 25 thought that taking PEDs was critical to success in professional sports or improve their athletic performance. More than three-quarters of both young males and parents in our survey said that professional athletes who use PEDs have pressured young athletes to also use drugs” (Newswire). Performance-enhancing drugs have their benefits, but they also have huge disadvantages and consequences. These drugs must be banned for the safety of young and old athletes. As Evander Holyfield said: “Well, when I think of steroids I think of an image. You have the advantage over someone, which is a form of cheating. I guess it wouldn't be fair if it wasn't legal for everyone. The reason it's not legal for everyone is because it can seriously injure people." The time has come to ban these drugs once and for all.
