In this story Anaya writes a multitude of messages that allude to the fact that the elders have an understanding that we have yet to know. When we are young, many like to look at life as if the only way to live it is to want everything to happen, but Grandpa sets the record straight with the simple words of "You know where you stand." These four words are anything but complex, yet many overlook them. Now, there is a well-known saying that goes: “A wise old owl lived in an oak tree; the more he saw, the less he spoke; the less he spoke, the more he listened; Why can't we all be like that bird?” (Richards, Edward Hersey). Through the words of grandfather and Mr. Richards, it is obvious that the older you get, the more you understand and
