Cultural identity is a person's background and how it relates to that person or group's culture, what you eat, think, and to the actions you take are all parts of the cultural aspect of cultural identity. If you were to ask someone what the cultural identity of African Americans was, regardless of the race of the person you asked, nine times out of ten they would mention the importance of Black History Month, but while the races around us are able to recognize the cultural identity of African Americans, importance of this historical month, why doesn't today's generation of young African Americans realize the importance of this month? The race of people he celebrates has put him on the back burner. The rise of technology and social media in today's era has turned young people's gaze away from what is culturally vital in the Black community as opposed to previous generations. Have you taken a look around lately? What do you see? When was the last time you walked around and saw a young person without some kind of technology in their hands? Technology and social media have almost completely taken over. The new society now revolves around all things technology. Today's generation is known as the “Similar Generation”, to recognize the fact that everything that gets noticed in today's society is only through social media. This has greatly influenced African American culture, today's black youth are much less likely to understand the rich legacy celebrated by Black History Month than, say, their grandparents' generation. The average grandparents' generation began in the late 1950s, a time when they would have been directly affected by the Civil Rights Movement and other major events that were occurring in the black community. They were… in the center of the card… it also influences them to take part in negative activities. “Every movie shouldn't be about something urban, hip-hop related to drugs,” (Lee.S) the way blacks are portrayed in the eyes of the media is nine times out of ten in a negative way, this only adds to the stereotypes negatives that come with being African American. Music also influences young black people's close ties to fashion, and the news it seems. Today's youth are so caught up in today's new fads that they don't even recognize or take the time to educate themselves about their past, they ignore the rich legacy their ancestors left behind. This generation has very little to no education about the past, so what will they have to pass on to their children at this rate, if someone doesn't step in and shift black people's attention to what's important, our rich heritage will soon disappear.
