Topic > history, man was fascinated by the thought of flying among the clouds. But recently it seems that man is slowly starting to come back down to earth and complete the tasks required of aviation with his feet firmly on the ground. As impossible as it may seem, the Air Force and Air Force are doing something almost unfathomable: flying planes without pilots. This amazing feat is accomplished through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These spectacular aircraft are revolutionizing the aviation industry using incredible technology and the brightest minds from around the world. Many prestigious aviation companies such as Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin, (just to name a few) have led the way in the design and development of UAVs. Even though UAVs are considered very modern and futuristic, the concept of flying without a pilot has been thought about for a long time. ("Short" 1) The idea was first tried during the US Civil War, when both the North and the South attempted to put explosives in a hot air balloon and drop them on each other's camp part. The idea of using hot air balloons was revived during World War II by the Japanese, who attempted to bomb the United States by using the wind to guide the hot air balloons. During World War II, the United States made a more successful attempt to produce a UAV, a prototype called “Operation Aphrodite.” (“Brief” 1) But it was the development of cruise missiles that paved the way for UAVs. The aviation company Chance Vought Aircraft is the company that took the first step in the production of UAVs by proposing the idea of putting landing gear on missiles. One of the first fully functional UAVs is the Firebee. The Firebee was designed by the Ryan Aeronautical Company and... halfway through the document...... forms surveillance and artillery missions ("Production" 1). Other countries with UAV programs include North Korea, South Korea, India, Pakistan, Japan, and Australia, to name a few (Wilson JR). UAV technology is available not only to industrial superpowers, but also to smaller countries. Unmanned aircraft are the future of aviation. When people think that the latest and greatest models can't be surpassed, they are surprised to find that what they thought was the best, is simply a stepping stone into a field with tons of potential. UAVs ensure the safety of humans, but they also perform jobs that, without them, would be difficult for humans to do. UAVs are the result of the most advanced technology known to mankind placed in an aircraft. With so many advanced UAV models already in existence, it is amazing to ponder what the future of UAVs holds.
