Gender ideologies have played a crucial role in shaping contemporary society. These ideologies are still present and continue to shape the attitudes and roles of both men and women. Gender ideologies can refer to the expected roles that both men and women are expected to perform. This reference can illustrate that men are expected to work and be the breadwinner while women are expected to stay at home and take care of their children. The novel Brick Lane and the short story collection Interpreter of Maladies both represent the influence of the homeland in diasporic experiences. Mainly, Brick Lane illustrates the life story and growth of two sisters, Nazneen and Hasina from Bangladesh. Hasina then runs away and marries the man she was in love with and Nazneen soon after moves to London to begin her arranged married life with Chanu. The setting therefore takes place both in Bangladesh, mainly in Dhaka, and in Brick Lane, a street in East London, England. Both characters, Nazneen and Chanu, are explored in relation to their influence on gender ideologies. Additionally, the reader first meets Nazneen when the story begins when Nazneen's mother gives birth to her. The sight is clearly explained but also notable, as the midwife declares the baby dead. However, when the newborn cries little, the three women present suggest that there is hope for the child's survival, although he is very weak. Rupban must decide whether to send his weak child to the hospital or simply see what fate will do. Despite his sister-in-law's wishes, Rupban declared that they must not thwart Destiny. This perspective then becomes very significant to Nazneen's outlook on her life. Nazneen, at the age of eighteen, is set up for... middle of paper... her ways of moving away from a traditional Hindu conception of wifehood. . Although it is through Westernization, Twinkle can therefore be seen as a unique individual while still conforming to the gender ideologies of women in the West. In closing, gender ideologies are present in both societies within the novel and short story. It helped accentuate the message for readers but more importantly, readers saw the different ways of thinking of both companies. However, it can be said that not all men should be bread winners and breadwinners, women can do the same but it is seen as the norm for her to stay at home and cook, clean, wash and take care of children but clearly these two contradictory arguments can represent both the West and the East. Therefore, it can be said that both gender ideologies may be valid but are useful either way.
