Topic > The Importance of Immigration and the Refugee Population

I think that those who fall into this population group are reluctant to want to receive services, due to their safety. Even if they are legal immigrants, there are still people in America who disagree that they should be here or even work in the United States (Gelfand, 1989). I believe that if they work, then they are trying to make a difference for their families and deserve the rights that we Americans have. I think something case managers need to be aware of are cultural needs and barriers. A common one might simply be language. Knowing the language is very important and allows you to understand on a more anthropological and cultural level where they come from and their needs. I think society is mostly against social workers who are in favor of helping this population, because they have never experienced it. Most people fear what they don't know, so even if case managers can't do much to necessarily "change" government policy or attitudes, then we could at least think about how to support a better lifestyle. Have a mutual understanding that we are all human beings who have basic needs and that there are people who don't receive them. Then perhaps society would be on the same page as social workers
