Topic > Eugene McCarthy's speech against the Vietnam War

What were Eugene McCarthy's reasons for opposing the Vietnam War? From the early 1960s until 1973, America was going through the anti-war movement. The movement had many leaders, supporters, and followers, including Martin Luther King Jr., Eugene McCarthy, and Robert F. Kennedy. The anti-war movement took place to demand the government end US involvement in Southeast Asia and stop the escalation of the Vietnam War. On December 2, 1967, Eugene McCarthy gave his “Denouncing the Vietnam War” speech in Chicago State before the Democratic Party. He speaks out against the war to highlight what an immoral and useless battle the United States was fighting. In the speech “Denouncing the Vietnam War,” Eugene McCarthy inspires his intended audience during the Anti-War Movement by using the rhetorical devices of logos and personification. In his speech, Eugene McCarthy describes why fighting the Vietnam War was a bad decision to make. First, mention how John F. Kennedy gave hope and courage to America and its people in 1963; on the other hand, in 1967, America was experiencing a period of frustration and distrust due to the escalation of the Vietnam War. McCarthy says America is not the world's police and shouldn't make promises they couldn't keep. Furthermore, the United States was fighting a pointless war in which no changes were seen. “I see little evidence that the administration has set limits on the price it will pay for a military victory that becomes less and less certain and more and more hollow and empty of promise” (McCarthy). Throughout the war, the United States made very little progress, even though it had decisions on paper. Some citizens strongly oppose the idea that the United States should not be involved in foreign affairs because it would place the nation in a period of chaos like during the Vietnam War.
