Soar on Wings like Eagles“A Very Old man with Enormous Wings” is a short story written by Gabriel García Márquez in the third-person objective point of view which uses magical realism to highlight some of its themes and literary elements. The story's title alludes to an angel that Peyalo and his family find after falling in their backyard. The story uses magical realism throughout, mainly through the angel to bring out elements relating to human nature. Márquez shows these various aspects of human nature in the story mainly by highlighting three main natures, caring, curiosity and opportunism of humans through his use of magical realism. Caring for something living is something that virtually everyone can identify with, regardless of whether or not that life has intimate value to a person. Through this idea it can be seen that there are different types or levels of care that everyone shows. This nature of caring for another's life can be seen within the story especially where Márquez writes that "they did not have the courage to beat him to death" (270) referring to Peyalo killing the angel. Peyalo refused to end another's life, however shortly thereafter Peyalo can be seen watching over the angel from his kitchen armed with a bailiff's club as a weapon in case an opportunity arose that might change his mind. This contrast of emotions seen by Peyalo may raise the question: Does Peyalo naturally have some form of care for this other life that has in no way directly threatened him or his family. If Peyalo actually connects with the angel in a thoughtful way, why should the thought of bludgeoning the angel to death be considered an option for him, the… center of the paper… the world within the text of “A very old man with enormous wings”. What it means for people to care, explore, learn, foster, survive and be curious about the amazing world around them. These themes centered on human nature become much more meaningful when you place them next to the angel. The humans did not care enough about the angel, as is clearly seen by noting how they took advantage of him by exploiting him for the opportunity he aroused due to their desire for wealth. The family used him to satisfy their curiosity, also treating him as a common pet. All of these factors are a testament to the many shortcomings of the human race even when graced with something that only a short time ago they could not have even imagined and which would continue to exist regardless of their interference..
