A person who is able to go through life with many hardships, such as dropping out of school and dealing with the death of a family member, can actually continue to pursue your own lifestyle in the future. In J.D. Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye, it becomes apparent that Holden has difficulty accepting himself and others as he constantly refers to people as "fake". Before we can understand why Holden goes on his journey, we must understand his struggle. Holden leaves Pencey because he was surrounded by fakes and wants to find success elsewhere. He tries to find someone to communicate with by turning to his family. Holden just wants someone to talk to and wants to break his depression by being successful. Before we can understand why Holden goes on his journey, we must understand his struggle. Holden can't find a way to succeed. Mr. Antolini also says: “This autumn, I think you're running, it's a special kind of autumn, a horrible kind. The falling man is not allowed to hear or feel himself touching the bottom. It just keeps falling and falling” (187). The autumn that Holden is heading towards began with him failing school. Holden's greatest failure appears to be his inability to engage in school, which makes his life even more difficult. Additionally, Mr. Spencer is concerned about his ability to apply himself since he is failing 4 classes and "taking the ax is something he is familiar with" (4). Holden just wants someone to talk to and wants to break his depression by being successful. Additionally, Holden leaves Pencey because he was surrounded by fakes and wants to find success elsewhere. No matter how many people try to help him, Holden sarcastically points out how badly they treat him. For example, Holden talks to Ackley for a while and... in the middle of the paper... he fights. Holden just wanted someone to talk to and wants to break his depression and succeed. In my opinion, I believe Holden finds what he is looking for because of Phoebe riding the carousel because it makes Holden happy, “I felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way Phoebe kept going back and forth” (213) . Holden's struggles have collided with his destiny of being depressed and as long as Phoebe is by his side, Holden has someone to communicate with and now live a peaceful and comfortable life. The life lessons that Holden faced throughout the book completely changed his life by knowing his true character towards the end of the novel. His life revolves around his problems and he seemed unable to avoid them. That said, Holden found himself dealing with issues of accepting death, growing up, and his own intentions.
