Topic > Fact or Myth: Drug-Free School Zones - 917

By starting college right after high school, students experience a new sense of freedom. Students can come and go as they please, hang out with whoever they want, and stay up as late as they want. The decisions students make are a test of their morals and the lessons they have developed throughout their lives. One decision students across the country are making is to use different types of medications. The variety of drugs abused ranges from alcohol to over-the-counter medications. As Joseph A. Califano states in his article, Wasting the Best and the Brightest: Alcohol and Drug Abuse on College Campuses, he criticizes the following from his research, […] “a disturbing atmosphere of hedonistic self-indulgence and alarming public health crisis on college campuses across the country” (Califano). One campus that appears to be an expert in self-indulgence with various drugs is the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. UWO currently ranks fifth in the country for arrests of students for possession of illegal drugs (“Drugs on Campus”). Illegal drug use has become a nationwide problem; however, focusing solely on UWO students allows for a more personal connection. Being able to see firsthand the experiences of our peers using different types of drugs and also being pushed by our peers to join in on their “high.” From this, we are able to see the types of drugs that are used, the effects the drugs have on our colleagues and what is a likely solution to the drug abuse problem at the UWO. The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is known for its illegal activities that students take part in for fun or relaxation. Commonly called "Sloshgosh" and, as mentioned above, is closely examined when found in the center of the card. Not just at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, but on campuses across the nation. The only thing that can be done to help reduce the number of drug addicts is to educate students about the effects of drugs and how life can be fun without them. Works cited "Adderall Side Effects."
