Destiny is the development of events independent of man's will, determined by a supernatural power. There is always a lot of debate about whether or not a person has a say in their fate or whether every event occurs as a result of fate. This is a topic that is touched upon numerous times in Sophocles' play. In Sophocles' play Oedipus the King, Oedipus tries to escape his fate, but instead fate brings him closer to it. To start, fate comes into play when Oedipus decides to run away from home. He thinks that Phoebus and Marope are his real parents and knows that his destiny is to kill his father and marry his mother. He obviously doesn't want to experience any of the events the Oracle told him would happen, so he runs away. To some it may seem that it is his free will to escape, but in reality it is the opposite. The gods know that he is not the son of Phoebus and Marope. They know that Oedipus will try to escape his fate and that's exactly what they want him to do.
