Topic > The horrors of a child soldier and its prevalence in...

Throughout history there have been people, hidden, asking for help against the social injustices that deprive them of the right to live a normal life. Whether on a large or small scale, people around the world are becoming victims of a cruel and tiring lifestyle. Among the most widespread, the practice of child soldiers has proven to be a very serious problem of social injustice. The horrors these children face are unfathomable to most and bring many to tears. After observing the practice of child soldiers, one can see that this is a very serious social injustice problem that needs to be addressed. Many people around the world have heard and even seen the brutalities of child soldiers, but what is a child soldier? “A child soldier means any person under the age of eighteen who is, or has been, recruited or used by an armed force or armed group in any capacity, including but not limited to children, boys and girls, used as fighters, cooks, porters, spies or for sexual purposes” (Paris Principles on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict 2007). The use of children as soldiers has been accepted in many areas of the world, particularly those where there is little social stability. In most cases, violent conflicts erupt in response to economic, political and social inequalities among a group of people. Rebel forces begin to form and soon take drastic measures. Because these rebel forces are generally weak and under-resourced, they turn to using children as soldiers. With today's modern weapons, these men made it easy for children to become dangerous fighters. For many, it is difficult to understand why anyone would use children as soldiers. To put it simply, these men know that children are… the medium of paper… the Holy Spirit. The inspiration is presumably of Christian origin. They initially engaged in an armed insurgency against the Ugandan government, but later moved their activities to parts of Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The LRA is infamous for blatant human rights abuses, including abductions, murders, mutilations, sexual enslavement of young children and child soldiers. Another group well known for using children as soldiers is the Revolutionary United Front. This particular rebel group has made great use of child soldiers using horrific methods to harden their new recruits into dangerous weapons. Since the LRA was born in the 1980s, over thirty thousand have been kidnapped and forced to serve as child soldiers or as wives of older rebels; however, these numbers are growing rapidly with over ten thousand children abducted in the last eighteen months alone.
