The One Minute Manager is a book written by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson. It is a powerful tool not only for managing people but for changing our behaviors to be a better person. It is the story of a young man and a successful manager who managed to effectively manage his subordinates and influence them in One Minute Management. One Minute Manager conveys the difference between leadership and management. It puts emphasis on some unexpected changes that might occur in the organization and how we should deal with them. Furthermore, another functional area of management that the book addresses would be the reward power that the leader possesses. Reward power is when a manager rewards his subordinates. In the case of the One Minute Manager, he rewards his subordinates by praising the employee's job well done as it happens and recognizing it through the handshake or a pat on the shoulder. Here another power is exercised which is socialized power. It is a power directed towards helping other people. Since the One Minute Manager sets an example for his subordinates, the emphasis is on correcting or praising their behavior and not on the person who creates harmony and positive cohesion in the organization. The employee-centered behavior of the One Minute Manager in paying attention to employee satisfaction and harmony is establishing itself through his One Minute Management. Finally, the use of reinforcement theory is particularly evident in the use of positive reinforcement and extinction. One Minute Praising is a great example of positive reinforcement. It is when the One Minute Manager praises the positive behavior as it occurs and shakes hands to reinforce the behavior as a positive consequence. One minute… half the paper… is a better idea that would benefit the whole group and not just one. My boss would apply this strategy to be more effective in his leadership among his subordinates. Since she failed to lead her employees most of the time, she always focuses on people rather than behavior. Also, a simple “thank you” would be nice from him. My family and friends could also benefit from it to become more effective in dealing with people in their professional perspective and be a better person. I would definitely recommend this book to my family, friends, bosses, colleagues and people I deal with because it not only encourages but also demonstrates a high degree of respect and value towards other people. I know it would be a difficult task to acquire the attitude of being One Minute Manager, however, I know that through practice our attitudes will be changed.
