Tigers are huge and powerful creatures. I am the largest cat in the world. They use their bone-crushing teeth to kill animals twice their size, such as buffalo. They usually weigh between 200 and 700 pounds. They can survive in many different climates, from humid rainforests to the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas. They are warm-blooded mammals covered in fur. They also have a vertebra, which means they have a backbone. They have extremely powerful legs that help them run up to 35 mph, but only for short periods of time. They also help them jump up to 15 feet. and up to 32 feet. Their paws are padded so they can move safely in the jungle. Each paw has long, sharp claws that measure about 4 inches and are retractable when not in use. Unlike other cats, tigers love to swim, they use their large paws to move through the water. Tigers need to eat a lot to survive; it is not unusual for them to eat more than a hundred pounds in a week. They are very skilled hunters, but can only manage about ten...... middle of paper...... smaller ones such as rabbits, pikas and fish. They need to hunt often because they are not always successful. The Siberian tiger's gestation period varies from three to three and a half months and the litter usually consists of two to six cubs. They can give birth once every two years at any time of the year. The mother tiger cannot feed all her cubs enough, so some of them may die. There are only 400-500 left in the world, so they are considered at risk of extinction, due to illegal poaching and habitat loss. They have a breeding program to try to increase the population so they don't go extinct. Tigers are skilled, powerful creatures and revered by many societies. Puppies learn quickly to survive. Like other tigers, Siberian tigers are skilled hunters. Although many different species exist, they remain in danger of extinction.
