Blake Mouton's management grid: five leadership styles Leadership is today the determining factor of a successful organization. Given the large number of companies in the world, there are just as many leadership styles. Understanding different leadership styles is vital to the development of a management team and organization. Matching the leadership style to the type needed for the organization at that time will have a positive impact on the company. We can see examples of this in large companies that will experience a change in management when the production level falls below a certain benchmark. Blake Mouton's management grid consists of five different leadership styles. The different styles outline the behaviors, traits, attitudes and focuses of the various leadership styles. The five styles are; Country Club, Impoverished, Middle of the Road, Team Leader, Make or Perish Leader. The model highlights how emphasizing a particular area such as production could have negative repercussions on another such as people. The grid is based on the idea that when concern for both production and people is high, employee engagement and production will also increase. Impoverished Leadership This type of leader has a negative effect on organizations. With no system in place to complete tasks and creating a hostile, uninviting, and unmotivating environment, this leadership style is the most ineffective. This type of leader is “Low Production/Low People”. The impoverished leader does not set performance expectations that leave staff unaware of the tasks that need to be done or how to accomplish them correctly because no formal training has been provided to the Con... middle of paper.. ....of where Production and People are equally emphasized. This type of leadership sets high expectations for employees and ensures that they accomplish tasks while working with the team. They also establish incentive programs that help staff stay motivated and also create an environment of constant learning and trust within the team, ensuring staff are happy and comfortable. “Produce or Perish” Leadership “Produce is perish” leadership places the emphasis on high production and not so much on people. With this leadership style they believe that employees are expendable. They must be supervised and must be very strict and consider punishment as the most effective means of motivating employees.
