I wanted to become a nurse after an incident with my son Jordan. He was nine months old at the time. I went to put it on the floor in Melisa's room, my daughter, so they could play. Jordan was playing with blocks and Melisa was trying to get him to play with her dolls. The phone rang. It was my night call from my husband, grandmother, we called it Probe. Probe called to talk about all his neighbors and family and what they had done that day, hence the name Probe! After about ten minutes on the phone with Probe, Melisa came over and said something was wrong with Jordan. So I got on the phone with Probe and went to Melisa's room. Something was definitely wrong with Jordan. He was very floppy when I picked him up. His lips were turning blue and his eyes were rolling. I asked my daughter if she had swallowed anything and she said no. Thinking to myself that he might, I began rubbing the inside of his mouth looking for anything unusual. Nothing was found, but he began to squeeze my finger and did not want to let go. My first instinct was to call my mom. She and my father called the ambulance and we went to the hospital. After examination and numerous tests, we discovered that Jordan was having febrile seizures related to an ear infection. These chronic ear infections and seizures continued with seizure medications, antibiotics, and antihistamines until age 5. For me this was an eye opening experience. Never again would I find myself in the position of not knowing what to do. I started researching nursing schools and was forced to make yet another life-changing decision. The support I was hoping for from my husband wasn't there. Telling me it was just a waste of time and money. I knew that for me it was… middle of the paper… with gearing being critical to accurate work performance. I feel fulfilled learning about the new nurses I prescribe, the companies I have run, the nursing assistant courses I have taught, and the countless number of colleagues I come in contact with, I understand the importance of spreading knowledge about others to help them benefit in their own way. I am stubborn in following through with my goal of pursuing my education. These circumstances are why I started nursing and will continue to do so. Getting an education was very important to me in 1987 and still is today! I hope to study the Bachelor of Nursing course through WGU so that I can continue to accelerate my nursing career.
