IntroductionSocial issues are problems in today's society that are described as wrong, widespread and changing. A category of conditions that people believe should be changed. Poverty is a serious social problem in today's society. According to Peilin (2012), poverty brings hardship to families and individuals, as well as political hardship, thus negatively affecting social stability and social development and posing a serious threat to human security (p. 243). This article focuses on poverty as a social problem in today's society. First, it provides a brief introduction to the social issue, then describes how it fits into the field of sociology. Also evaluates sociological theories and terminology related to the social issue. The following section evaluates what is known and what is not known about the particular social issue. This is followed by a discussion of the value of sociological research on the issue which determines the available or possible practical implications of sociological inquiry. The information presented here is strongly supported by concepts and theories derived from reliable sources. Poverty as a social problem Poverty is generally defined as a state of deprivation of well-being. The conventional perspective links well-being fundamentally to control over goods, so the poor are individuals who do not have sufficient income or consumption to be above an adequate minimum threshold (Lyman et al, 2004). Poverty is also linked to a particular type of consumption, for example people can be considered poor in health, poor in housing or poor in food. The dimensions of poverty can often be determined directly. Sociological research helps describe poverty as a social phenomenon and creates a deeper and richer understanding of poverty as a social reality (Peilin, 2012). The main implication of sociological inquiry is that it provides a central organizing model for the discipline.
