Topic > Skeleton: a winter Olympic sport - 643

Skeleton is a sport where you compete against the clock. Athletes will go down an icy slope on a sled on their stomachs, with their heads forward. Each athlete completes four runs. Only six medals are awarded: 3 to women and three to men. The athlete with the fastest time in all four races combined wins. Men and women compete separately so there will be a gold medal for a woman, a gold medal for a man and so on. If two athletes achieve the same overall time, they tie and rank in the same place. It is forbidden to heat the sled skates or anything else that could facilitate sliding. They test the runners' temperature at the start of the race by referring to a reference runner who has been exposed for one hour before the start of the race to regular fresh air, athletes' runners must be within four degrees Celsius of the runner reference. Skeleton originated in St. Moritz Switzerland. It originated from an idea in the late 1860s by Caspar Badrutt. Its name was given in 1892 when a new sled made of metal came out and was said to resemble a skeleton. It appeared in the Olympics twice, in St. Moritz for the men in 1928 and 1948. Then, at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, it became both a men's and women's sport. The skeleton presents some problems and controversies. The US skeleton coach was suspended in late 2005 and early 2006 over allegations of sexual harassment, however no evidence was found to support this and he was later reinstated as coach of the women's team. Zach Lund was banned from competing for a year for using finasteride; this ban also included the 2006 Winter Olympics and forced him to forfeit a silver medal at the World Championships in November. Finasteride is a drug that could be used to hide evidence of the use of... middle of paper... Cover Center is also used for bobsleigh and sledding. The headquarters costs approximately $76.5 million. The length used for races can vary from 1384 to 1500 metres. The track has 18 curves/turns. The altitude from which the athlete would start would be approximately 836 m with a height difference of approximately 131.9 m leaving the arrival height at approximately 711.5 m. This sport has to do with geography because it is a very small section in one of the two main branches of geography. The two main branches of geography are human and physical, this would be under human. Below the human branch there would be many smaller branches going into even smaller branches. This sport would fall under the cultural branch of the human branch because it is part of the Olympics and the Olympics is a cultural event where many countries of the world come together and participate in multiple events/sports with each other.
