“One choice can transform you” (Roth). Every choice you make affects your future. Every choice has consequences. Every choice can change everything. Divergent, a dystopian society novel by Veronica Roth, is about a girl named Tris and her Four superiors who overcome the challenges of involvement in a utopian society gone awry. Society is divided into five factions: Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Candor, and Amity. Factions are made up of the people of society. Everyone has a faction they belong to, unless they're Divergent. Divergent means tending to be different or to develop in different directions. Three and Four are both Divergent, along with only a handful of others. Three and Four make fate-changing decisions, such as selecting their actions on the aptitude test, choosing to let each other know their secrets, and standing up for each other. When members of Twisted Chicago turn 16, they must take an aptitude test, which involves making choices and performing actions to ultimately obtain a result. The result they receive is the faction they belong to; but there is an exception. Anyone who is Divergent does not receive a single faction as a result; they receive a result of three factions they could fit into. Tris wakes up in the simulation of the aptitude test in the canteen of the school building. On the table there are two baskets: one with cheese and the other with a knife. Tris is told to choose, but she doesn't know which to choose, so she doesn't. The author states: “choose! She screams. When she screams at me, my fear disappears and stubbornness replaces it” (Roth, 14). The quote tells us that Tris Divergence occurs when she doesn't know which object to choose, so she becomes stubborn and not...... middle of paper ...... which controls the simulation and destroys the data” (453) . This shows how determined she is to shut down the program, so that Abnegation isn't destroyed and more people aren't killed than necessary. Tris' loyalty and defense towards Tobias changes her by showing her ability to take control in an intense situation and do the right thing. The choices that Tris and Tobias make, such as choosing their actions in the aptitude test, letting each other know their secrets, and standing up for each other, affect the overall plot of the book and the fate of the society and the characters. As discussed in this essay, one choice can change everything. A choice a person makes can permanently change their future. The moral is to make wise choices because the choices someone makes can transform them. “One choice decides your friends…your beliefs…your loyalties forever” (Roth).
