Topic > Gender Roles in the Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte...

Gilman in her autobiography, encourages women to do something for themselves by stating that "women's work is not exclusively domestic" (Gilman). My goal once was to become a housewife, but after studying and rereading "The Yellow Wallpaper" I don't want to put my fate in the hands of a man, when I have my own hands right next to me. I want to pursue a career and continue to do so even when I find the right man in my life, I want to think for myself and not base my opinions on the people and society around me. Elizabeth Keyser, literary critic of “The Yellow Wallpaper,” states in an article, “offers a blueprint for reversing gender roles and an action plan to encourage a feminist return to patriarchy” (Weinbaum). Gilman through her story encourages women to continue questioning the society we live in, until we feel equal. The narrator does the same to her husband, as she continues to write even though she is forbidden to, and tears up the wallpaper even though her husband says there is nothing wrong. As a woman, Gilman encouraged me to question my traditional ways and strip away the conventional norms that have been woven into my life.
