How can finance help cure depression? At first glance it may seem like an absurd question, but I happen to find that the logic behind finance actually helps me cure my depression. I was a perfectionist trying to take control of my future and I couldn't tolerate any small failure. Even though in most cases I achieved good results, I always paid more attention to what I didn't achieve. Meeting with psychotherapists did not treat my depression well because those sentimental psychological theories could hardly convince me until I came across finance, whose rough numbers and rational logic are much more convincing to me. The most striking example is the concept of sunk cost. It taught me that whatever I failed to achieve in the past should no longer concern me and I should focus on current conditions and make the wisest decisions possible from now on. Other concepts like NPV also provide me with new perspectives to see my life more optimistically. Finance becomes more interesting when I can see beyond the finance itself. By connecting finance to my situation, I've learned more about how to live a happier life, which gives me more fun while I work. Fascination with numbers Perhaps my absolute fascination with numbers predestined my passion for finance. I like being able to see the facts, whether they pertain to a specific company or the entire market, through calculating and interpreting financial ratios. This is why I chose accounting, a much more challenging major than business administration, as my concentration during undergraduate studies. Accounting is the foundation for any financial business and provides me with a solid background in understanding different tasks such as… middle of paper… Although I self-taught advanced calculus, intermediate statistics and basic computer science during my college years, I feel like I still need a systematic learning experience. I believe that MIT's Masters in Finance program will serve as a critical link between my background and my career goals. In particular, the program will provide me with integrated accounting, finance, economics, IT and mathematics skills that are in high demand in the modern financial sector. Additionally, MIT demonstrates its motto, mens et manus, by allowing students to apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world through numerous internship opportunities. Given such valuable resources offered by the Master of Finance Program, I believe that my education at MIT will not be limited to simply a tool for advancement, but also a life lesson that will benefit me forever.
