Topic > Overview of Conflict Management in the Workplace

IntroductionOn several occasions, conflict occurs in the communication of one or two people. Many people have thought of conflict as involving the pouring out of furious anger into a communication process. However, conflict is the misinterpretation of an individual's words or values (Huan & YAzdanifard, 2012). Conflict can also be due to limited resources in an organization (Riaz & Junaid, 2010). Conflicts may also arise due to poor communication or the use of inappropriate communication channels for transmitting information between the parties involved. Conflict management has various conflict management styles which include avoidance style, forcing style, passive-aggressive style, accommodating style, collaborative style and compromising style. Workplace conflict comes in two different types: task conflict, which focuses on the approaches used to solve the problem, and blame conflict which has aspects of blame and never brings any elements of problem solving between the parties in conflict. In the perception of many individuals, relational conflict is negative. Workplace Conflict According to Riaz and Junaid (2010), there are four levels of conflict appraisal: intragroup, intergroup, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. Sources of intrapersonal conflict include inappropriate demands on one's abilities, goal inconsistency, and misassignment. Misassignment increases in cases where an employee is assigned a task for which he does not have the right skills or knowledge, commitment or attitude. The employee experiences qualitative role overload resulting in role conflict. The employee is unable to meet the specified capacity even if he works according to his capacity, which leads to quantitative psychology. 14(2). 101-117.O'Rourke, J. & Collins, S. (2008).
