Abbot Suger wanted to make Saint Denis a magnificent place of spectacle as the royal abbey church of France and the burial place of French kings. The ribbed vault which was capable of covering large areas was designed to enlarge Gothic churches. These Gothic churches were characterized by an enlarged skylight area, enormous windows with a new area inserted and a triforium under the ribbed vaults and the support of a portico of tall pillars lining the nave. These features ensured that the increased stresses of the taller and wider interiors were supported and that larger window areas as well as exterior supports were created. A greater sense of unity was created between the spaces of the nave and the adjacent walkway and outpatient chapels. In the process the builder became more complicated and was able to achieve ever grander effects at various points. These locations include; Notre Dame de Paris in 1163, Amiens Cathedral in 1220 and Sainte-Chapelle in 1243. in these places the windows were enlarged with extensive use of stained glass, which reached the level of its development in the 12th and 13th centuries in Chartres and Sainte - Chapelle. The sculptures in the exteriors and interiors of these churches were decorated. Large figures of kings were placed on the facade, while the entrance was flanked by pillars, statues of saints, angels and apostles, and other parts of the buildings were covered with decorative spires and pinnacles. Revolutionary Gothic sculptures went beyond their Romanesque precursors in their conception of figures as independent. Gothic sculpture became more complex in the following centuries. The figure of the Virgin in the south transept of Notre Dame de Paris is an example of such a Gothic figure in France. F... middle of the paper... there's something really inspiring.
