Topic > Determining the Effectiveness of Peanut Shell in…

Chapter IThe Problem and Its SettingIntroductionIn recent years, growing awareness of water pollution and its far-reaching effects has spurred concerted efforts toward reducing the pollution. There are many pollutants (bacteria, heavy metals, chemicals, etc.) present in water. If we don't find solutions to clean our water, our marine animals will die. According to Prof. Mercedez Cabling of the University of Science and Technology Nueva Ecija, the condition of the Nabao stream was in danger. So, we decide to do an experiment that can help degrade pollutants in water but in a cheaper way, we will only use peanut shell. Peanut shells are one of the largest waste products from the food industry and could be used to extract pollutants from water. The shell of peanuts can absorb chemicals in water. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of peanut shell in degrading pollutants present in water and with the help of carbon filter. Although the industry uses many chemical processes to remove heavy metals from wastewater, most of them are very expensive. This new method appears to be more economical and environmentally friendly. Problem Statement This study aimed to determine the potential of peanut shell as a tool to degrade pollutants in water and to clean industrial wastewater pollutants. In particular, we attempted to answer the following questions:1. What are the effects of this experiment applied to water as a filtering treatment?2. What are the limitations and boundaries of the said experiment to avoid side effects and damage to the environment?3. Is there any significance in the treatment applied to other clean and polluted streams in the Philippines?4. HypothesisBased on the previous research experiments...... half of the paper ......more peanut shell and soaked the peanut shell in a short period of time.AppendicesNabao CreekGet water from Nabao CreekPeanut shell60 g of peanut shell 40 g peanut shell20 g peanut shellWater with peanut shellAfter filtering with peanut shellCharcoalFilter water with carbon filterResult of the studyBibliographyBekman S.(2009)10 Water purification: physical treatment: activated carbon filter ; retrieved from http://stason.org/TULARC/sports/survival-water-treatment/10-Water-Purification-Physical-Treatment-Activated-Charcoa. html in September 25,2009
