LunchboxTA: JennaName: Prabhsimran ChhabraCourse: SOC101YStudent Number: 1000013308Date: April 2, 2014IntroductionIt is often said that sexism is a topic of the past, yet women still face gender oppression throughout life. The concept of gender oppression, defined as persecution associated with gender norms, relationships and stratification in a society. Indian culture perceives men as breadwinners and women as caregivers of the family. In a country like India, patriarchy has been a norm for about two hundred years; Indian society has emerged to become a patriarchal society. Women have been given the power to raise their voices and are kept silent in cases, including those of sexual or verbal abuse. Such issues have forced Indian women to live under a glass ceiling, preventing them from reaching their full potential. This structure has led India to be a patriarchal society, where men are the breadwinners and women take care of their families. Research QuestionA film in which women are seen as inferior to men, the film depicted the socially structured norms of India, where gender oppression was evident in every part of a patriarchal society. The issues observed led to the development of the research question: How does the film Lunchbox depict gender oppression in a patriarchal society? OperationalizationThe film Lunchbox demonstrated Indian culture in a unique way by focusing on the life of a woman living in a patriarchal society. The variables chosen to measure were gender stereotypes, gender oppression, and patriarchy. To measure gender stereotypes, socially constructed views of men and women and gender roles were used as subcategories. As for gender... at the heart of the document... it gives them the confidence that women are no less than men. Comparative discussion. The first report focused on social isolation and culture. Since these were not a major part of the film, there were some inconsistencies in the observed data. However, for my second report, the focus shifted to gender oppression. I chose gender oppression as the primary variable for measurement because of its relationship to the previously measured variables, Social Isolation and Culture. The first essay report consisted of weak information to support my variables, so I carefully observed every aspect of the film and collected as much data as possible to describe the relevance for the variables chosen for the second report. The second report capitalizes on in-depth information with detailed explanations and providing greater understanding of the concepts observed in the film.
