Topic > Trick of a Serial Killer: Theory of Crime and Heredity

“Dime con quien andas, y te dire quien eres.” This famous Spanish phrase translated into English reads “tell me who you walk with and I will tell you who you are”. The question is: can you? Does one's surroundings play a role in who one becomes and one's behavior in life, or is it innate? Since the time of philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Hermes, and even Socrates, there have been great debates about whether we as humans are born wired a certain way or whether we become products of our environment. This topic, commonly referred to as Nature vs. Nurture, continues to be a topic of debate among us today. More recently, the concept of nature versus nurture has been used in the gay, homosexual, and bisexual community. While many argue that sexual preference is a decision made based on sexual exposure and experiences, others argue that people are actually born that way. The idea is that they are born with the “gay gene” and have no control over their sexuality. While sexuality is currently the “hot” topic within the concept of nature versus nurture, the makeup of murderers and mass murderers has long been part of this back-and-forth debate. Are people born to kill? If you believe in the theory of evolution, then as animals it is entirely possible that we are born to kill by nature since killing is a survival trait. Conversely, if you believe in the church and the idea that man was created by God, then that would mean that we must be creatures of our environment. In this article I will discuss a variety of theories and ideologies often used by both scientists and psychologists when discussing their opinions. I will also discuss and compare different cases regarding serial murders trying to find similarities as well as differences...... middle of paper...... ultimately leads us to become what we do in life, I also believe that ours also l The environment plays a significant role. In life we have choices, it is up to us to decide which paths we will take in life. As long as we have decision-making capacity, it does not matter to whom or into what environment we were born.
