"A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner is a short story narrated by an anonymous character to be considered as the voice of the hometown and tells the story by order. The story is based on the life of Emily Grierson and how she connects to the South after the Civil War. There are many parts in the story that show symbolism in various ways. Some of these symbols include Emily's house, her hair, her clothes, and even the "rose" featured in the story. Symbolism is shown in many different ways through all forms of literature. It is mainly shown through the main theme and the smaller themes present throughout the story. Symbolism is used to represent ideas or qualities through the use of symbols. The title itself is the first hint of symbolism shown in this short story. A rose is often used as a symbol of love, in which case throughout this story Homer is the "rose" to Emily, or also known as Emily's love. Emily's father was a man who never allowed or accepted that anyone was good enough for his daughter. Because of this, Emily was never able to experience love until the day she met Homer. A rose can also symbolize silence. This can be interpreted throughout the story that Homer was still Emily's rose, but then known as her "secret". Emily loved and cherished Homer and kept him for herself after his body was corrupted over time. Many women dry roses to preserve them forever. Emily was known for having a warped and unhinged mind, and that being said, she wanted to keep Homer forever "drying his rose". The room he placed Homer Barron in was described as having “pink-tinged lights” (330) which may also link to the symbol of…half of the card…occurring in his life. Emily's stubbornness is then also shown when the narrator describes the house as "stubborn and flirtatious" (315). Faulkner uses symbolism to help bring out the main points of the story itself and also uses this symbolism to show how Emily is an allegory. for the changes that occurred in the South during the Civil War period. Using the symbols of the rose meaning love or silence, or the hair meaning that over time things change, or even the house, being backwards to the old Civil War days, symbolism is shown in many ways in this short story. William Faulkner wrote "A Rose for Emily", in a way where the reader is able to understand and interpret the main points of the story in a different way than where he will be able to look deeper into the meaning of each part of history. story rather than having a boring meaning behind everything.
