Healthy People 2020 is a health promotion program that aims to improve the health, well-being and longevity of the nation by 2020. This document will focus on the Healthy People 2020 objectives, on how they will impact the families of those suffering from mental health disorders and those at risk of injury from violence. It will further discuss potential barriers that exist between promoting these goals and interventions that nurses can use to achieve them. 2020 Goals for Healthy People It is very important for Americans to be proactive about their health and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Americans suffer from many health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, mental disorders, and addiction. What is important to understand is that many of these diseases are preventative or their onset can be delayed and health risks reduced by using preventative services. Healthy People 2020 is a national health promotion that focuses on helping people improve their health and increase longevity by improving infrastructure, expanding prevention services and promoting education and awareness. Although we are all human, our differences in ethnicity and race can put us at greater risk for various diseases and conditions. For example, “Hispanic Americans have variously been reported to have higher rates of obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, dyslipidemia, and diabetes” (Allison et al., 2008, p. 962). Healthy People 2020 can help reduce health disparities among Americans. It is a broad health promotion model that works to improve health infrastructure by developing a stronger and more efficient foundation for the health system. , pacing back and forth and clenching his teeth and fists. We also offer therapeutic communication to try to solve patients' problems and address their concerns, and we offer medications to help reduce anxiety and frustration. If a patient continues to display aggression or violence, we call “code grey” to indicate to security that we need assistance with a patient who is combative and poses a danger to himself or others. In some cases we are asked to place a patient in four-point restraints until they are able to calm down and no longer pose a threat to others. In conclusion, Healthy People 2020 is a national promotion that all nurses should support and contribute to by working hard to educate, encourage and provide excellent care to their patients. It will help our nation achieve longer, healthier lives and health equality and eliminate disparities among all groups.
