Gun control in America is seen as ineffective, citizens believe that the gun control laws in place do not protect lives, but take them away. To solve this problem, many think more laws should be enacted. In this way, they believe that weapons would no longer be in the hands of criminals and that lives would not be ended prematurely. In Christine Watkins' article, "Stronger Gun Control Will Save Lives," she explains that if guns were objects that truly kept us safe, America would be the safest country in the world. He also states that a gun in any home is more likely to be mishandled, resulting in an accidental discharge. He also suggests that more common sense laws would be of great benefit to gun owners (Stronger Gun Control). One of his points is quite agreeable: more common-sense gun laws would be entirely helpful in the long run. Having more safety guidelines, such as; trigger locks, which prevent the use of the weapon, keeping the ammunition and the weapon separate, never pointing the weapon at another person, unless your life is in danger, ensuring that the gun is properly cleaned on a regular basis, and even teach children how to handle guns properly. By taking these common sense precautions to use, countless accidental fires in homes would be prevented. On the other hand, laws put in place simply to make it harder to obtain a gun are not the answer. By keeping guns out of the hands of lawful citizens, only lawbreakers will benefit. Author John R. Lott, Jr. wrote the book titled More Guns Less Crimes, informs readers that having a concealed gun, instead of openly carrying a gun, has greater potential to reduce crime rates throughout America.
