I. IntroductionIn the television show Hannibal, a basic plot is formed between Will Gram the protagonist and Dr. Hannibal Lecter the antagonist. Hannibal Lecture is an accomplished psychiatrist who is also a cannibalistic serial killer. In the show, Dr. Lecter is Will Graham's psychiatrist and helps Graham separate serial cases from his reality. However, Graham is unaware of Dr. Lecter's extra circulars, specifically he is the serial killer that Graham is looking for but is unaware of it. Due to his psychotic nature as well as his devious but cold behavior, I would diagnose him with antisocial personality disorder.II. Background and diagnosis of the character The character I have chosen to analyze is Hannibal Lecter. Based on the various manifestations of his behavior, I would have diagnosed him with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Although ASPD seems self-explanatory, in reality ASPD has more to do with disregard for the rights of others than antisociality (Rosenburg & Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). For example, someone with ASPD might threaten to harm others or themselves (Rosenburg & Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). In the DSM-IV-TR, at least three of the seven specific criteria of ASPD must be displayed by the age of 15. One particular criterion concerns failure to adhere to social norms in accordance with the law (Rosenburg and Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). Although Lecter adheres to social norms such as composure and respect when in public, he breaks the law by repeatedly committing murders. Another criterion involved cheating, lying, and deceiving, for personal gain (Rosenburg and Kosslyn, 2011, p. 592). Hannibal Lecter met this criterion tenfold. It works in what would seem appropriate in s...... middle of paper ......conclusion, I feel that Hannibal Lecter's diagnosis would be antisocial personality disorder with a tendency to be more on the psychopathic side of this disorder. He demonstrated six of the seven DSM criteria that identify a person with ASPD. Additionally, his behaviors fit well with psychopathy, which is a narrower view of ASPD. As mentioned above, this can cause problems when trying to treat the disorder. Therefore it has been stated that there is no clear treatment. Because of this lack of care, I assumed his future would end in solitary confinement or death. However, Hannibal Lecter is very good at giving advice to both his friends and patients, even if superficial. Furthermore, he is an amazing cook and was also very polite. Overall, he is very intelligent in many areas other than psychology, however his ASPD, serial killings and cannibalism will be the end of him..
