The railroad crossing in the 900 block of Eureka Street continually has an overgrown vegetation problem that presents a consequential hazard. This specific crossing proved dangerous. On June 5, 2008, a catastrophic fatality occurred. In 2008, the intersection had no gates or traffic lights, but only displayed cross signs with a stop sign. The track has a dangerous bend near the intersection. Proper maintenance of vegetation is vital to the safety of municipal employees who cross this route to get to the wastewater treatment plant. Consequently, due to the lack of maintenance and supervision of the vegetation growing around the railway tracks, a young man lost his life. Furthermore, lives were changed forever. Operation Lifesaver, Inc. points out, “ABOUT EVERY 3 HOURS, A PERSON OR VEHICLE IS STRIKED BY A TRAIN.” These statistics highlight the importance of proper maintenance at regulatory sightline lengths. Although a gate with flashing lights has been installed as a safety precaution, there are no guarantees that the gate and lights will not fall victim to mechanical failure. Therefore, the maintenance of the vegetation is essential for visual protection from another victim that occurs in this precise crossing, in the meantime, with a false sense of security devices positioned, a cycling and hiking path has been installed along this route to enhance the community. Although the hiking and biking trail concept improves vigor within the community, it conversely increases the potential risks of public pedestrians crossing this trail. Not to mention the unattended children riding bicycles along the trail.
