Ever since I was five years old, I went around telling everyone I wanted to be a doctor. It wasn't until I was eleven that I realized I wanted to work with children too. So I looked at my mom and said, “Mom, what do you call a doctor who works with kids all the time?” I didn't know whether or not it had a special name like everything else. She looked at me and asked why I wanted to know. I told her, “I want to know what kind of doctor I want to be.” He told me everyone would call me a pediatrician. So all I could think was, “My next step is to learn how to write this.” A pediatrician is the person children go to until they turn 18. The five things you need to understand about this career are history, description, training and education, salary, and outlook. The word pediatrics comes from a root meaning healer of children; they originate from two Greek words: παῖς (pais = child) and ἰατρός (iatros = doctor or healer). Lee J. Sutton Jr., Ph.D., was the first full-time professor in the United States to teach pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia (History Department). In the 18th century, children became the focus of separate medical care (“paediatrician”). In the period from 1928 to 1959 there were great changes in medical and pediatric care and teaching for all (History Department). In 1973, the DP (Department of Paediatrics) opened one of the first youth units, demonstrating its commitment to serving all newborns, infants, children, adolescents and young adults (Department of “History”). Child health care became recognized as a medical specialty in the early 19th century, and by the mid-19th century, pediatrics was taught separately in nearly all medical schools (“Pediatrician”).
