The Importance of Chapter Six in The Turn of the ScrewChapter Six is an important section of The Turn of the Screw, as it involves many of the story's themes, as well as reflecting its overall narrative structure. James's novel is extraordinarily complex; it has an incredible ambiguity, which allows you to formulate some very bizarre and far-fetched ideas. From almost any other sentence you can derive a "theme", if you wish. It's about deciding which issues have more to them than they might seem at first glance and which are what they seem, nothing more, which is difficult. As with many books of its genre, excessive analysis is a serious risk in essay writing. Take things one aspect at a time and start with narrative structure. While not exactly a key issue of the story, narrative structure can often influence how such issues are revealed and detailed to readers, so it still maintains some relevance to the title of the essay. The overall structure of chapter six is very similar to that of the story as a whole. It starts quietly, after the climax at the end of the previous chapter (like the main part of The Turn of the Screw after the prologue, which creates a lot of anticipation) and begins to slowly increase in tension throughout, with a slight pause in the middle, where the narrative becomes very thoughtful and introspective, with the Governess writing her thoughts seemingly as they enter her head, creating somewhat rambling and dense prose. Finally, when readers least expect it, the plot suddenly appears again, creating an exciting žnale ("Then I moved my eyes again - I faced what I had to face.•) that leaves many plot threads open ..... middle of the paper ...... - a gothic story This is most evident when Miss Jessel appears on the other side of the lake This is a particularly gothic image, made even more vivid in the next chapter , when she is described as “a figure of equally unmistakable horror and evil: a woman dressed in black, pale and frightening. • In retrospect, this makes the end of chapter six seem even more gothic. Chapter six reflects many of the story's key issues, more so than most chapters. However, The Turn of the Screw is a very intense book, and every sentence seems to have hints of a deeper, darker reflection on James's writing. It is not unusual in this story to have a single chapter that contains a great deal of important information relevant to the rest of the book; however, chapter six tends to explore more issues in such a short space than other sections of the story..
