We've all heard it over and over again, listening to everyone keep saying how it's wrong and it's unhealthy, but honestly people wouldn't act the way they do if they cared what everyone else thought. This especially applies to those of you who smoke marijuana. If marijuana users really cared about what everyone else thought, they wouldn't use it, even though it is illegal, marijuana is one of the most accessible illegal substances around. If marijuana is so attainable and so many people enjoy using it, then why has it been so difficult to legalize it? Marijuana can be extremely beneficial in several ways. Medical marijuana has many uses, it helps relieve pain, side effects of chemotherapy and can also help with the symptoms of many other diseases; marijuana could also potentially boost the economy through all its revenue and help reduce the crime rate. Since 1619, marijuana has been considered a valuable natural growth resource. Jamestown, Virginia, ordered the Indians to grow hemp seeds (Guthier et al.). In 1910, marijuana was made illegal in Utah, and states have followed the trend ever since (Guthier et al.). Marijuana has been associated with a number of negative publicity stunts. Yellow journalism played a key role. Harry Anslinger, a journalist, had an investment in the paper company. Due to the threat of losing his business, he released public records related to the establishment. Since the public became fearful, marijuana has become illegal. States now condone these laws and allow marijuana for medicinal uses. The fight for legalization is growing fiercely and rapidly. Marijuana is illegal, but can be used throughout the medical field.
