Some define history as a science because of its approach to analyzing facts and using all resources to find an answer while others argue that it is simply one artistic study of the centuries. J.B. Bury stated that "History is a science, no more and no less", in a period soon after dramatic changes had been made to the approach to the analysis of History as he represented many people of the Victorian generation and their desire on a more factual than history. Throughout the nineteenth century we witnessed people demanding a more accurate understanding of the past. Jared Diamond argues that historians “receive little training in the recognized sciences and their methodologies.” Many schools and philosophers are of the opinion that history is not a science, due to its inability to provide certain answers. However many argue that there are many similar methodologies used by both practices, along with similar end goals, perhaps learning from past mistakes to counter future and current problems. It will be difficult to provide a definitive answer in this essay if history is a science as has been discussed by some of the most important historians of our century such as Edward Carr. Using sources from Carr and other leading philosophers and historians I will aim to outline the meaning of history and science, the similarities between the two, along with the differences. I will also outline the fine line between arguments as part of my analysis with the aim of providing as structured an answer as possible on a very complex topic of debate. Successfully analyze whether History is a science, or more, or less than we need to decide on an accurate approach to the term science.
